It was 1957. Rock and roll was here to stay. “I Love Lucy” ruled television. Gradually, as the initial post-World War II boom passed, the appeal of smaller Cape Cod-styled homes developed by Albert Balch in northeast Seattle began to wane in favor of more spacious residences that could accommodate the growing families and the relaxed patio lifestyles emerging in the West.

Although a handful of different builders contributed to the classic style of Alicia Park, the mix of homes, each featuring a unique floor plan and distinctive architecture, consistently showcased many of the hallmarks of mid-century design, such as slate entries, multiple stone and masonry fireplaces, interior and exterior planters, spacious yards and vast expanses of windows to bring the outdoors inside. Styles ranged from the dramatic Modernism of flat roofs and clerestory windows to the clinker brick and hipped roofs of Frank Lloyd Wright to the Colonial revival look that was emerging as a fashionable trend in the 1950s.

These days, Alicia Park, with its graceful downward flow, peekaboo views of Lake Washington and feeling of privacy, remains one of Seattle’s most desirable neighborhoods for families of all stripes.
